HBOT & Cerebral Palsy

HBOT & Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral Palsy (CP) can be caused by numerous factors such as hypoxia during birth, infections in the brain tissues, and even a severe head injury or trauma.  This condition usually involves symptoms like uncontrolled movement because of neurological dysfunction.  CP symptoms can vary depending on the severity of the condition; ranging from difficulty during fine motor skill tasks to seizures and cognitive impairment.

HBOT and CP research is still a new and emerging concept with promising results.  A study conducted in Montreal in 2001 by Collet et al. found that 111 subjects tested with 40 sessions improved substantially in gross motor functions, language, attention, memory, and functional abilities.  Another study conducted in Brazil by Machado (1989), saw a 95% decrease in spasticity.  6 months post treatment, 75.6% of the children saw improvement in cognitive function.

These results are being attributed to increase oxygen flow (caused by hyperbaric pressure) into the brain tissues that may have become dormant from any blood flow blockage in the brain.  Re-awakening these tissues may increase their functioning ability.  It has also been mentioned that increase oxygen may improve cerebral metabolism and function the the normally functioning cells.  Finally, the ability to alleviate swelling, even in brain tissues will increase the growth of new blood vessels and provide an increased blood flow to that area.
